It is a great honor for me to have been asked to present the Ludwig von Mises lecture here at the Austrian scholars conference. Let me begin with a story. When I came to select my list of the ten most influential economists of the twentieth century in an article published in the Canberra Times on December 1999, an article which can still be found on the Societies for the History of Economics website, the economist I chose as the most influential--not the best nor the greatest, mind you, but as the most influential--was John Maynard Keynes. No one, I regret to say, has had more influence than Keynes.
